The Doe Run Co., headquartered in St. Louis, has declared force majeure for primary lead metal production at its Herculaneum, Mo., lead smelter. The declaration is a result of a fire that took place at the smelter’s electric substation March 20, 2012.
The company says it expects production of primary lead at the smelter to be suspended for four to six weeks as it replaces equipment and makes repairs.
“The damage to our Herculaneum plant’s substation is significant,” says Gary Hughes, general manager of Doe Run’s Primary Smelting Division. “We’ve identified the damaged equipment and have replacement parts ordered. Delivery and installation of the equipment is expected to take four to six weeks. We’re doing all that we can to expedite the process, but in the meantime our primary metal production is on hold.”
The company will continue to produce secondary lead metal from its secondary smelter in Boss, Mo.
