DOE Awards Grant to Pa. Firm

The U.S. Department of Energy awarded a $7.2 million grant to Universal Aggregates LLC, South Park, Pa., that will assist the facility in manufacturing aggregates from coal combustion byproducts. The company plans to construct a manufacturing facility in King George, Va., which will convert power-plant scrubber sludges into masonry blocks and concrete. The total cost of the plant is expected to be $18 million.

The grant will come from DOE's power plant improvement program. The facility is projected to use more than 115,000 tons of byproducts to produce 167,000 tons per year of finished product.
