DJJ subsidiary earns safety recognition

The River Metals Recycling (RMR) facility in Somerset, Kentucky, has received a SHARP (Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program) designation from the United States Department of Labor. RMR is part of the Cincinnati-based David J. Joseph Co. (DJJ), which is a subsidiary of Charlotte, North Carolina-based steelmaker Nucor Corp.

Somerset is the fourth RMR recycling facility in Kentucky to receive a SHARP award, according to the company, joining locations in Newport, Owensboro, and Paducah. The Somerset facility has had no work-related injuries or illnesses for four years straight, according to RMR.

Kentucky SHARP Administrator Phillip Bush says SHARP is the highest honor OSHA awards to small work sites that “demonstrate an exemplary commitment to workplace safety and health.”

“At RMR, safety is our number one core value,” says Bob Eviston, RMR president. “This award is a testament to RMR’s comprehensive safety process including ongoing training and procedures to ensure the safety of all teammates, customers and suppliers. I want to thank the entire RMR team for their continued ownership of zero.”

DJJ says River Metals Recycling is the largest scrap recycler in Kentucky and in the greater Cincinnati area, with nine locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Based in Crescent Springs, Kentucky, RMR has more than 200 employees.
