The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality will be holding a public meeting Nov. 19 to discuss the permitting of Road & Driveway Co. The company has been permitted by the DEQ since 1973 when rules were adopted requiring all asphalt plants to obtain an air quality permit. Over the years, the community has expanded around the plant, and there have been some complaints about odor.
Recently there has been increased community interest in the odors associated with the facility and concern about the potential health effects of air emissions. In August, several people asked the Environmental Quality Commission to provide more information.
The meeting will be held Nov. 19 at the Newport, Ore., City Hall. The meeting will include background information about asphalt air emissions as well as information about potential health effects.
DEQ staff will be joined by staff from the Oregon Department of Human Services - Public Health Division to answer questions. For more information about the meeting, contact Dan Fox, (503) 378- 5408, or fox.dan@deq.state.or.us.
