Dell Recycling Names Program Winners

Computer company expects to continue its recycling program in six more locations this year.

Dell Inc. announced 12 grant winners whose awards of $10,000 each are to be used to conduct computer collection events across the United States this spring.

Recipients of the grant money will use the award to organize, promote, stage and recycle computer equipment collection events in their community. Dell also will continue to conduct its own recycling events in 2004.

Recipients of Dell's Recycling Grant Program awards for spring 2004 are:

-- Anchorage, Alaska - Green Star Inc.

-- San Ramon, Calif. - Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority

As part of the program, grantees will receive technical assistance and guidance from the National Recycling Coalition to aid in the success of their events.

The training will also cover strategies for developing effective partnerships for collection and selection of responsible recycling processors, fund development, and media and grassroots outreach.

The 10-member grant review board, consisting of individuals from a variety of Dell business units, the federal government and experts from environmental and recycling organizations, based its selections on considerations of the quality of the collaborative effort, prospects for successful outcomes, geographic diversity, sustainability of the program beyond the grant period and the ability to leverage the local community's existing recycling infrastructure.

Dell will hold six recycling events in 2004. Each event will be paired with a one-day training program that features national recycling experts as speakers in a program designed for municipal and university recycling coordinators who wish to learn how to stage their own recycling events.

Dell's 2004 events kick off in Austin, Texas, on Jan. 30 and 31. Events are also slated for East Lansing, Mich.; New York; Boston; Los Angeles; and New Orleans this year.

Dell remains a partner in the Environmental Protection Agency's Resource Conservation Challenge education program, "Plug-In To eCycling."
