DataGuard USA has introduced an online service to handle the growing demand for shredding of electronic equipment, principally computers.
Using its Ship ānā Shred service, customers are now able to ship old computers to the closest authorized contractor for processing.
Steven Hastert, DataGuard USA's vice president of technology explains, "There is a tremendous amount of sensitive data stored on the average desktop computer, potentially including credit card numbers, financial records, account information, and security codes. Reformatting the hard drive does not render this information irretrievable. Consumers need to destroy the hard drive to fully protect the data."
Hastert adds because electronics are a regulated hazardous waste, it is now illegal in most states for businesses, organizations and governments to landfill e-wastes.
"What's great about the Ship-n-Shred solution is how easy it is to solve the problem. Customers simply go to www.shipnshred.com and order a FedEx shipping label. FedEx picks up the computer and delivers it to the closest plant," says Hastert. "We destroy the data and properly recycle the components. The customer gets a Certificate of Destruction."
Ship 'n' Shred's online service also facilitates shredding of documents, official uniforms, pill bottles, defective products, credit cards, X-rays and other sensitive items requiring secure destruction.
