DataGuard USA, LLC has introduced a new service to address the growing concern over identity theft. Called Ship 'n' Shred, the service allows businesses and individuals nationwide to package confidential information, ship it and destroy it securely.
"Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that trash belongs to the public domain, America's garbage has become the single most available source of competitive and private information," said Steve Hastert, vice president of operations and technology at DataGuard.
"Ship 'n' Shred helps prevent identity theft by giving its users peace of mind when disposing of their private information."
Ship 'n' Shred offers a safe and secure pick-up, delivery and destruction process. First, people gather materials they need destroyed and seal them in their own box. Next, customers log onto Ship 'n' Shred's Web site (http://www.shipnshred.com ) where they purchase and print a shipping label for each box.
After the box is picked up by the shipper or left at one of its nearby drop-off locations, the materials are transported to the nearest secure shredding plant. When the box arrives at the plant, it is scanned for the customer's tracking number then shredded by trained security experts; even the boxes are destroyed.
The customer is then notified by e-mail once the box has been destroyed and they can print a Certificate of Destruction from the Web site.
All services related to shipping, including label printing, pick-up, tracking, transportation and delivery, are provided by operating companies of FedEx Corp. "Ship 'n' Shred is unique because it destroys everything," said Hastert. "That's the beauty of it; even electronics, x-rays, pill bottles and official uniforms can be destroyed. And it's incredibly simple and economical to use."
