Dart Container accepts polystyrene foam in Dallas

Dart Container Corp., headquartered in Mason, Michigan, has introduced polystyrene foam recycling to Dallas County in Texas with the opening of a drop-off center that is publicly accessible 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and completely free of charge. The drop-off center provides an option for local residents, businesses and organizations to recycle foam labeled with the No. 6 chasing arrows symbol. Often mistakenly referred to as “Styrofoam,” a trademark name of Dow Chemical, the product is frequently used to make foam take-out containers.

The Dallas drop-off site, located at 4444 W. Ledbetter Dr., will accept a wide variety of recyclable foam, including cups, egg cartons, meat trays, ice chests and packaging that is frequently used to protect electronics during shipping.

“We hope that this new and free recycling drop-off facility will encourage Dallas residents to recycle foam materials they may otherwise throw away,” says Michael Westerfield of Dart Container. “This new facility is one of more than 85 drop-offs Dart has facilitated in North America.”

Once collected, the foam is recycled into many different products, including picture frames, baseboards and crown molding.

To participate in the program, individuals should: 

• ensure the foam has the No. 6 chasing arrows symbol on it;
• deposit foam in a clear or translucent bag;
• rinse or wipe foodservice containers free from food; and
• remove straws, lids, tape or any other nonfoam material.
