Italy-based Danieli & C. S.p.A. will provide overhead scrap handling cranes and a Q3-DYMS Scrap Yard Management System to Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine.

Two years ago, Voestalpine indicated Danieli would be supplying engineering, production and commissioning equipment and services for two planned recycled electric arc furnace (EAF) mills in Linz and Donawitz, Austria. London-based Primetals Technology also is a supplier to those projects.

Now, Voestalpine has awarded Danieli a contract for five automatic scrap yard cranes at the Donawitz site, which will be integrated with the Danieli Q3-DYMS Scrap Yard Management System system there.

The cranes will feature what Danieli calls advanced automation technologies, including absolute positioning systems, intelligent video cameras (Danieli Eye-On), electrical antisway and regenerative drives, scrap material classification and volumetric detection for yard inventory.

The cranes are capable of operating with electromagnets or electrohydraulic grabs and have been designed to ensure efficient, autonomous and energy-saving operation, according to Danieli.
