North Carolina City Joins CVP

Greenville, N.C., to launch recycling education campaign.

Greenville, N.C., residents will be asked to “Recycle More” this fall through a campaign launched with the help of the Curbside Value Partnership (CVP), Stamford, Conn.

A program of national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful (KAB), CVP is partnering with the city of Greenville, KAB affiliate Keep Greenville Beautiful and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance (DPPEA). CVP is working with Greenville to develop a local campaign to promote the ease of recycling in the city. The campaign will become part of DPPEA’s upcoming statewide Recycle More N.C. campaign.

While the campaign will be tailored for Greenville, the DPPEA will make campaign outreach materials and other creative concepts available to other North Carolina communities.

Steve Thompson, program director for CVP, says, “For years, CVP has been impressed with the education campaigns developed by DPPEA. The new Greenville partnership engages both the city and the local Keep America Beautiful affiliate in promoting the local curbside recycling program. As a result, we expect greater participation by residents and an increase in curbside collection rates.”

Scott Mouw, state recycling coordinator, DPPEA, says, “Every 3.9 seconds North Carolinians throw away enough plastic bottles to reach the height of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. With the plastic bottle landfill disposal ban now in place, we need to educate and remind people to recycle as much as possible to help us create jobs and grow our economy. This partnership with CVP will allow us to provide additional education tools to communities throughout the state making it a cost-effective relationship for us.”

The campaign likely will launch in conjunction with America Recycles Day, Nov. 15, according to the CVP.

“We’re excited to be a part of something bigger than just Greenville,” says Wes Anderson, director of public works for the city of Greenville. “By combining forces with the state, we hope to not only see an increase in recycling, but also an increase in understanding of just how important recycling is for North Carolina.”

The CVP, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is designed to grow participation in curbside recycling programs nationwide. CVP’s goal is to launch and study education programs to increase participation in local curbside programs and to make programs more profitable and sustainable.
