According to the Abilene (Texas) Reporter-News, Abilene’s proposed curbside recycling program may cost more than was originally anticipated.
Earlier in 2016, the city distributed curbside recycling agreements and letters to customers who expressed interest in participating in the program, which was estimated to cost between $5.57 to $7.50 per month. This cost is based on the number of residential contracts at the start of the program, the article says.
“Due to a smaller than anticipated number of valid resident responses, the city is requiring a signed contract before we spend over 1/2 million dollars on this program,” Public Works Direct Michael Rice wrote to the newspaper. “Unfortunately, if the city does not receive enough executed contracts in a timely manner, the proposed pilot program may fail before it begins.”
Under the agreement, the program cannot begin until the city has purchased a truck, recycling containers and personnel to collect recyclables. Collection will occur once every two weeks.
