World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), Brussels, declined by 0.3 percent to 151.5 million metric tons in September compared with the same month in the previous year. Crude steel production for the month declined by more than 3 percent compared with the month of August, when it totaled 156 million metric tons.
For the first nine months of 2019, world crude steel production was 1,391.2 million metric tons, an increase of 3.9 percent compared with the same period in 2018, according to Worldsteel. During the first three quarters of the year, Asia produced 1,000.1 million metric tons of crude steel, an increase of 6.3 percent compared with the first nine months of 2018, while the European Union saw its production decrease by 2.8 percent to 122.5 million metric tons. North America’s crude steel production for the first three quarters of 2019 was 90.6 million metric tons, an increase of 0.3 percent compared with the same period in 2018. The Commonwealth of Independent States produced 76 million metric tons of crude steel in the first nine months of 2019, a decrease of 0.1 percent compared with the same period in 2018.
Within Asia, China’s crude steel production for September was 82.8 million metric tons, 2.2 percent more than the country produced in September 2018, according to Worldsteel. India produced 9 million metric tons, which was 1.6 percent more than in September 2018. Japan produced 8 million metric tons of crude steel in September, which was 4.5 percent less than it produced in September 2018. South Korea’s 5.7 million metric tons of production totaled 2.7 percent less than the country made in September 2018.
In the EU, Germany produced 3.4 million metric tons of crude steel in September, which was 4 percent less than in September 2018. Italy produced 2.2 million metric tons, or 1.1 percent less crude steel than in September 2018. France produced 1.2 million metric tons of crude steel in September, a 10.2 percent decrease compared with September 2018. Spain’s 1.2 million metric tons of production was a 1 percent decrease compared with the previous year.
Crude steel production in the U.S. was 7.1 million metric tons, or 2.5 percent less than in the previous year.
Brazil produced 2.4 million metric tons of crude steel in September, which was 22 percent less than in September 2018.
Turkey’s crude steel production for the last month totaled 2.7 million metric tons, a decrease of 6.9 percent relative to September 2018.
Crude steel production in Ukraine was 1.7 million metric tons in September, for a 2.3 decrease compared with September 2018.
