U.K. Company Holds Grand Opening for Automated MRF

Cory Environmental invests around $40 million on the new MRF.

Cory Environmental, a U.K.-based waste management firm, has officially opened its newest materials recycling facility in Wandsworth, U.K. The equipment installed at the MRF came from Machinex Industries Inc., a Canada-based equipment company.

According to a Machinex release, the cost of the new MRF is £25 million (US$40.7 million).

According to a release, Cory’s newest facility is able to process more than 84,000 metric tons of recyclables per year collected from the Western Riverside Waste Authority, which incorporates the London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Wandsworth and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Cory Environmental was officially opened by Britain’s Princess Anne on March 10, 2011.

Peter Gerstrom, CEO of Cory Environmental, says, “The opening of the MRF is an important step for Cory’s operations in London. The MRF will have a very significant impact on our abilities to recycle great volumes of waste going forward. This official opening marks the culmination of a long process, and I would like to thank everybody involved for their hard work on the project.”

According to Pierre Paré, president of Machinex, the plant was a significant accomplishment for the company. “We have a number of sorting projects in America and are very pleased to have developed this facility. It was a challenge because of the size of the building, and we partly use gravity on the four levels for the process. There are 14 Pellenc optical sorting machines.”

The release says that an important challenge of the project for Machinex was the complete automation of the single-stream system. The facility contains more than 100 conveyor belts and an array of hi-tech devices, including optical sorters and magnets that allow the recyclables to be separated into different commodities.

The company also notes that a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) was installed that will allows an operator to supervise all the operations from the control room. The SCADA can detect anomalies in production, which has the benefit of increasing productivity, boosting profitability.
