The shipment of corrugated products dipped 1.2 percent for June compared to figures the same time last year, according to the most recent figures from the Fibre Box Association.
For the month, shipments stand at 31.53 billion square feet, compared to 31.899 billion square feet last June. The figures for the month pushed the six-month shipment total to 187.599 billion square feet, a 1.8 percent drop from last year. The biggest loser for both the month and first six months was the Northeast, which saw shipments plummet more than 6 percent for the month and drop by 4.2 percent for the first six months.
While the Northeast showed the largest drop, the East Central U.S. posted a 1.3 percent increase in shipments between last June and this June. Further, East Central shipments posted a modest 0.1 percent improvement over the first six months of the year.
While overall corrugated shipments dipped for the month, the consumption of containerboard at domestic mills increased. According to the FBA, shipments totaled 2.427 million tons for June, a 0.1 percent improvement from last June. The improvement for the month pushed the six-month consumption figure to 14.337 million tons, a 1.1 percent decline from last year’s first six months.
The increase in consumption helped to lessen the inventory of material. At the end of June the containerboard inventory at corrugator plants dropped by 0.5 percent to 2.204 million tons. The drop in inventory levels also pushed the weeks of supply on hand to 3.6 weeks, a 10 percent drop from figures the same time lst year.Latest from Recycling Today
