According to multiple news reports, Sichuan Hongda Group has decided to halt the construction of a copper alloys production facility in Sichuan Province after protests by nearby residents concerning the pollution risks.
According to China.org, Sichuan Hongda Group held a groundbreaking of the molybdenum copper alloys plant June 29, 2012. The project was slated to cost $1.65 billion.
However, according to Chinanews.com, protests from residents that the new facility would generate significant pollution forced the local government to halt the project.
One news report indicates that in response to the vigorous protests, Mayor Xu Guangyong and Executive Vice Mayor Zhang Daobin announced the Sichuan Hongda Group would suspend construction of the plant immediately.
A report by Reuters indicates that after first saying the project would be suspended, local government officials are now saying the molybdenum-copper alloy facility will no longer be built at all in the city of Shifang.
