PA Consulting (PA), London, and PulPac, a research and development company headquartered in Sweden, have announced that United Kingdom-based consumer health care company Haleon and the consumer health division of Germany-based Bayer Global have joined the Blister Pack Collective.
The Blister Pack Collective aims to bring together pharmaceutical, consumer health and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) businesses to accelerate progress toward more sustainable tablet packs, free from plastics like polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
PA and PulPac say they have developed the technology needed to create a functioning dry molded fiber (DMF) tablet blister pack, which could reduce the yearly use of plastic medicine packaging by approximately 110,200 tons.
“When a leading company like Haleon validates our technology, it’s a testament to the innovative power of dry molded fiber worldwide,” says Sanna Fager, chief commercial officer at PulPac. “By joining forces, we can move faster and tackle challenges collaboratively and effectively.
“When we started PulPac, we set out to replace single-use plastics at scale by building an ecosystem of changemakers around dry molded fiber. We are excited to see that vision come to life and be embraced by the industry."
According to PulPac, DMF technology minimizes CO2 emissions and reduces the CO2 footprint by 80 percent while requiring minimal water usage. The tablet packs are comparable to PVC packs in terms of design and tablet count.
“We are excited to welcome Bayer to the Blister Pack Collective,” says Tony Perrotta, PulPac partnership lead at PA Consulting. “PA and PulPac formed the Blister Pack Collective to accelerate the progress to reduce single-use plastics, especially problem plastics like PVC, in over the counter, prescription drugs, nutraceuticals and confectionary items.”
