Construction Begins On Canada's Biggest Metals, E-Waste Recycling Facility

GEKO Recycling Technologies Inc. hosted a groundbreaking ceremony this week at the Edmonton, Alberta, Waste Management Centre to signal the start of construction of Canada's largest metals and electronics recycling facility.

The $30-million facility will process 30,000 metric tons annually of commercial, industrial and consumer electronic and electrical waste including computers, televisions, small appliances and metal windows and doors.

It will be the first venture outside of Europe for the Germany-based company, a newly-formed subsidiary of the DiHAG/GEKO Group, which has over 2,000 employees in 20 subsidiaries operating in various environmental industries and foundry operations in Europe.

The idea for the company was conceived four years ago in Edmonton through "Project Germany", an investment attraction initiative spurred on by Mayor Bill Smith. Since that time, Mayor Smith has worked closely with GEKO officials, encouraging them to locate at the Waste Management Centre, facilitating various discussions with the City of Edmonton and Alberta Environment, and assisting with business case development.

"Edmonton's Waste Management Centre is one of Edmonton's jewels" said Mayor Bill Smith. "As we continue to attract leading-edge technologies like GEKO's, demand to join this great center will only grow."

The 55,000 square-foot plant, which will employ 34 people, is expected to open in spring 2005.
