Connecticut Gravel Business Seeks Permission to Recycle

The owner of a gravel pit in Colchester, Conn., has applied for a permit that would allow him to add recycling to his operations, according to a report in the Norwich Bulletin (Norwich, Conn.).

Thomas Rankl of Rankl Sand and Gravel is seeking a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals that would allow him to conduct recycling operations on his seven acre property. According to the report, town regulations require a minimum of 100 acres for such an operation. Rankl is also seeking another variance that would allow the Planning and Zoning Commission to ignore outstanding violations, according to the report.

New activity could include rock crushing and recycling asphalt and concrete.

Neighbors have raised concerns over dust and additional noise and traffic.

The Zoning Board of appeals will take up the matter at its July 18 meeting.
