Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell has signed into law a bill that establishes a mandatory recycling program for certain major electronic devices, including computers and televisions.
The law, substitute House Bill 7249, requires electronics manufacturers to register their devices with the state Department of Environmental Protection and pay annual fees that will be used to recycle the devices. Cities and towns will also be required to provide recycling for the devices.
The new law, which goes into effect Oct. 1, specifically exempts certain small electronic devices from the recycling requirement, including cell phones, calculators and pagers.
