Bestech, Inc., a construction and demolition general contractor based in Ellington, Conn. will pay a $2,000 penalty for violating state air quality regulations, as part of a negotiated settlement with the Department of Environmental Protection.
On August 28, 2002, DEP inspected a demolition site in Chicopee, Mass. The demolition work being performed by Bestech was causing excessive dust that affected adjacent facilities. Moreover, the contractor had not properly notified DEP of the project.
Massachusetts regulations require that dust and particulate matter be controlled during construction and demolition projects.
With the settlement, Bestech has agreed to ensure that its construction and demolition projects comply with all applicable regulations.
“ Routine inspections are one of the best tools that we have to ensure environmental compliance,” said Michael Gorski, director of DEP’s Western Regional Office. “These inspections, in conjunction with effective enforcement actions, can prevent future environmental problems from occurring.Latest from Recycling Today
