The electronics recycling company CompuCycle, based in Houston, has announced that it is the first and only company in Houston to have received the Responsible Recycling (R2) Certification. The R2 practices were developed by a multi-stakeholder group led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
R2 certification sets forth environmental, worker health and safety and security practices for processing end-of-life electronics.
Laura Spanjian, sustainability director for the city of Houston, says, “The city of Houston applauds CompuCycle’s award as Houston’s first certified recycler. It’s vital that all businesses and individuals practice ecologically sound electronics recycling. Mayor Parker has made a cleaner, healthier environment a centerpiece of her administration.”
Clive Hess, CompuCycle founder and vice president, says, “Improper disposal of e-waste is not only harmful to the environment but also can pose security risks if hard drives haven’t been properly erased.” He adds, “Our data security procedures and R2 Certification assure partners and customers that CompuCycle is on the cutting edge of responsible recycling.”
CompuCycle, founded in 1997, is a full-service e-scrap recycling operation.
