Command Packaging, Vernon, Calif., has introduced its Smarterbags, a plastic reusable bag made from plastic scrap derived from agricultural sources in California. To grow the market, the company also announced it would invest about $25 million to expand the operation. The company expects to use nearly 100 million pounds of recycled agricultural plastic.

The Smarterbag solution is sensible, simple and sustainable. It's time to address the single-use grocery bag issue without initiating a return to less environmentally friendly options like paper bags.”
According to Command, Smarterbags meet all standards to qualify as reusable bags in California cities that have implemented bag ban ordinances. Smarterbags are strong and are engineered to be used 125 times.
"We are creating ways to take advantage of using "smarter" plastic. By manufacturing affordable, plastic reusable bags we will reduce the number of bags used in California," Grande says.
Command Packaging says it is the first U.S. company to adopt and implement the European recycling model that requires agricultural plastic to be recycled and used in the manufacturing of other recyclable products like reusable grocery bags.
