Comec Ups Recycled Copper, Aluminum Exports

South American metals company looks to boost scrap exports.

Chilean metals company Comercial de Metales Cerrillos has increased its recycled copper and aluminum exports to 19.5 percent of total production compared to an average of 5.5 percent last year.

"Our growth has been very good and according to our plans. We are planning to reach 40% in the next two years," commercial manager Fernando Nilo told BNamericas.

Comec exports its production to China (50.3 percent), Korea (27 percent), India (9.2 percent), Mexico (6.9 percent), the United States and Germany (3 percent each). It plans to boost sales to the United States and Europe. "Those markets will soon become more important thanks to the free trade agreements Chile is working on [with the US and EU]," Nilo said.

The company also handles 300 tons per month of mixed metallic and non-metallic waste material. Exports of recycled non-ferrous metals from this waste have increased to 85 percent of the total, or a monthly average of 255 metric tons, from 66 percent or 198 metric tons the first half of this year.

Nilo also said the company is seeking a joint venture or strategic alliance with a non-ferrous metals recycling company, "whether American or European, in order to incorporate new technologies in computer recycling and the recycling of tires for the mining sector."

Comec exports copper other metals and non-metallic products from recycling solid waste from the mining, electric power and other industrial sectors. The company claims to use "clean" or non-contaminating production techniques. BN Americas
