NBC 4 and Shred-It Mobile Shredding and Recycling host event July 17.

NBC 4's Target 4 Consumer Unit is ready to help you fight identify theft, one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. With identity theft costing Americans $5 billion last year, it's vital for consumers to protect their identities and private information. Shredding personal paperwork is the key to protection. Consumers throughout Central Ohio are invited to shred their personal documents during the NBC 4 Shred-It Day at The Schottenstein Center.

Shred-It Mobile Shredding and Recycling will provide four trucks for FREE, quick and easy disposal from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Shred-It Day will be stationed in the Schottenstein Center Scarlet Parking Lot to eliminate your unwanted personal paperwork for free.

More than 500 car-loads of people showed up to NBC 4's first Shred-It Day on May 1, 2004, where more than 12.5 tons of paper were shredded, including one attendee’s documents that dated back to 1954.

  1. If it rains, will the event be canceled? No, it'll happen rain or shine
  2. Is there a charge for parking? No, parking is FREE!
  3. Do I have to remove staples, paper clips. etc? No, but you should take paperwork out of binders and notebooks
  4. Do I need to sort out the paper? No, Shred-It Mobile Paper Shredding and Recycling’s bonded and professional employees are trained to quickly and accurately process and shred the material.
  5. What can be shredded? Financial and legal documents, receipts, tax and medical records, plus floppy disks and CD's can all be shredded.
  6. Is there a limit? Yes, no more than 5 standard-size boxes per household will be accepted
  7. Can my business bring paper to shred? No, this is for consumers only
  8. Can I drop my stuff off and leave? No, we need you to stay with your documents until you see them shredded. NBC 4 volunteers will be on hand to help you! We will have four Shred-It Mobile Shredding and Recycling trucks on hand so it should go quickly.
  9. What happens after the paper has been shredded? The destroyed documents, in the form of confetti-sized pieces, are transferred to a recycling facility, where they return to the marketplace in the form of items such as recycled household paper products.
  10. How can I be guaranteed that my sensitive documents have been completely destroyed? At the end of every shred, a Certificate of Destruction is issued to every client assuring him or her that his or her materials have been completely destroyed.

This is a consumer only event. No businesses or organizations can participate. Shred-It Mobile Shredding and Recycling uses shredders that utilize a cross-cut shredding process, creating a crisscross cut of paper. These crisscross paper pieces are no larger than 5/8 inch in size, which provides for a greater security than conventional strip-cut shredders. 100 percent of all shredded documents are recycled. You will not be able to pull your car right up to the shredders, but NBC 4 will have volunteers available to help you get your files from your car to the shredder. - NBC 4
