The Hillsborough County (Florida) Landfill and Columbus McKinnon (CM), Sarasota, Fla., are working together to provide education and demonstrations on the successful recycling of end-of-life tires.
The landfill has been recycling tires since 1997, and since 2007, it has been using a CM Dual Speed Tire Shredder. The shredder processes passenger car, light truck, and tractor trailer tires into 3-inch chips. The chips are used for clean daily cover at the landfill and provide drainage and stability to the site.
A portion of the recycled tires are also transported to a local electric company to be used as tire derived fuel (TDF), where it is incinerated as an alternative fuel source to provide electricity to the county.
Hillsborough County also allows CM to bring potential customers and government officials from to its landfill for live demonstrations of the shredder. According to CM, more than a dozen different groups have been given tours and demos this year, including waste authorities from the United Kingdom and St. Lucia, as well as private sector companies from Bogota, Colombia, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio. CM says it has so far gained two new customers from the visits.
