Columbus McKinnon Corp. (CM), Sarasota, Florida, says it has developed a line of hybrid shredders for the general waste and recycling industry. The company will feature the shredders at WasteExpo 2016 June 6-9 in Las Vegas.
CM has more than 30 years of experience in the design and development of tire recycling systems and holds numerous patents based around cutting, screening and separation technologies for tires. The company says it is bringing its engineering experience and expertise to the general waste industry, designing a new line of dual-shaft shear shredders and recycling systems that are suitable for a wide range of applications.
The product line consists of six models of low-speed, high-torque dual-shaft shredders from 10 to 250 horsepower with cutter boxes ranging in in size from 17 inches by 14 inches to 63 inches by 58 inches. CM says the first machine was developed and installed more than three years ago and initially was used to shred tires for one of the company’s existing customers.
CM says the shredders feature advance knife-locking systems, bearing protection and PLC (programmable logic controllers) controls. The company adds that the shredders’ cutting technology represents the biggest technological advancement the line offers and is an adaption of its patented knife technologies for the tire recycling industry.
Larger machines will be offered with through-hardened replaceable tipped knife segments. This knife system allows for just the cutting tips to be replaced rather than the entire shear knife. “Not only do these replaceable knife tips last longer but they are less costly and can be sharpened and reused numerous times,” CM says, adding that this can reduce knife costs by more than 300 percent in addition to the downtime associated with knife changes by as much as 50 percent.
CM says that in most cases it can adapt existing shredders of all makes and models with its new knife system. This allows processors to take advantage of this new technology without replacing their existing shredders.
CM has installed a testing facility at its Sarasota location, and customers are invited to send material to test in one of its many shredders. The company will record all tests on video, and customers are welcome to witness the testing of their material in person, as well.
