Cleveland Scrap Employs Three Sennebogen Material Handlers

Company has two 825 M machines and a 835 M working at its 10-acre yard.

Jacob Youngman, executive vice president of Cleveland-based Cleveland Scrap, and his business partner and father Allen Youngman have grown their company from a two-acre “peddler” yard to a 10-acre ferrous processing facility in roughly four years.

The experienced management tea, at Cleveland Scrap learned long ago that the key to long-term success in the scrap business is through controlling the cost per ton and operating efficiency at every step. This meant selecting the right processing and material handling equipment for the operation.

The company operates three Sennebogen Green Line material handlers. Two of them are 66,500-pound 825 M models fitted with quick-couplers to switch easily between magnets and grapples and the third is a 94,500-pound 835 M with a 67-inch magnet. All of the machines are fitted with rubber tires and each operates at its daily peak capacity in the unloading and loading cycle, according to the company.

Following a demonstration of the Sennebogen equipment, Jacob says Cleveland Scrap “analyzed their operating costs and how it fit our vision. We expected seven-day-a-week operation, with no downtime.”

Lee Gibson of Gibson Machinery LLC, Cleveland, a Sennebogen Green Line distributor, has worked closely with Cleveland Scrap from the company’s startup, supplying the company with its material handlers and mobile shears. “They have placed their confidence in us, and we respect that position of trust,” Gibson says of Cleveland Scrap.

Jacob says, “The Gibson relationship is so important to us. While we have our own on-site mechanics performing our regimented preventive maintenance program, we handle 90 percent of all issues.” He adds, “The Sennebogen material handlers are simple to service, and you don’t need the ‘geek squad’ on call, as there’s no computer on board. Gibson Machinery handles anything beyond our scope, but there hasn’t been much.”

Jacobs says Cleveland Scrap’s three Sennebogen machines were the right choice for the company. “I wouldn’t buy another machine. Even as we speak, we’re considering another four Sennebogen machines for Cleveland Scrap, all fitted with shears.”
