The U.S. EPA announced that Skybel Tissue, a defunct paper mill located in Greenwich, N.Y., has been cleaned. The contaminated site came to the attention of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation after an arson fire last August. The state requested that the EPA to clean it up because of the significant threat posed to the surrounding community by improperly stored chemicals and other hazardous materials at the site.
EPA assessed the site last fall and, working in cooperation with local officials and the Greenwich Fire and Police Departments, began cleanup in January.
The EPA spent more than $500,000 to clean up the Skybel site.
