Cleanup has begun at a Limestone County, Ala., recycling site following a series of legal battles, according to a report in the Huntsville Times (Huntsville, Ala.).
County officials tell the Huntsville Times that the cleanup of the former Recycling Solutions Inc., Madison, Ala., began April 25 and is expected to take all summer to complete.
The city had awarded a contract to the company to accept municipal wood waste in 2002, which the city later cancelled after complaints from residents who lived near the site, according to the report.
The Huntsville Times reports that the company then sued the city and then filed for bankruptcy in late 2003.
A neighboring recycling facility in Huntsville, Ala., Diversified Recycling, has agreed to remove all recyclable materials from Recycling Solutions’ 2-acre site, according to the report.
After the cleanup, the site will be leveled, covered with dirt and seeded with grass.
Materials being removed from the site include plastic, vinyl siding and metal and wood construction debris, according to the Huntsville Times.
