Clatskanie, Washington, Post Office receives sustainability award

Postmaster General-sponsored program recognizes efforts to reduce environmental footprint.

The Daily News, Longview, Washington, reports that the Clatskanie, Washington Post Office  has received the national Sustainability Excellence Award for its efforts to encourage a sustainable work environment.

The program is sponsored by the Postmaster General and run by the Office of Sustainability in cooperation with officers from the headquarters and the field, the article says. Clatskanie Postmaster Pam Wantland entered the post office in the competition last fall.

“We’re totally dumbfounded and stoked and very proud,” Wantland told the newspaper. “We thought we do such a good job … I thought we should be considered.”

The Clatskanie Post Office provided additional recycling bins for employees and customers. It also reduced garbage pickup to twice monthly instead of weekly, which save the location roughly $200 per year, according to the article.

“In small, rural towns like Clatskanie, curbside recycling isn’t always available,” Wantland said to the newspaper in an email. “Customers can appreciate an environmentally responsible alternative to bringing home or discarding their mail.”
