CIWMB Issues Grants for Oil Recycling Project

California state agency awards $5 million to improve oil recycling projects.

Eighteen local governmental agencies in California will receive $5.1 million from the California Integrated Waste Management Board--the state’s primary recycling agency and a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency--to help manage used motor oil in their communities.

"Protecting California from unsafe motor oil handling is of paramount concern," said Waste Board Chair Linda Moulton-Patterson. “We are glad to be able to assist cities, counties and regional waste management authorities in this important area.”

The California Oil Recycling Enhancement Act mandates the Waste Board to provide a comprehensive statewide program to safeguard against the illegal disposal of used oil in landfills and storm drains.

The money is available from the Waste Board’s Used Oil Recycling Fund, which is paid out of the $.16 fee California receives on each gallon of new motor oil sold in California.

A portion of the total used oil recycling fund is set aside to help local governmental agencies begin used oil collection centers and curtail the improper disposal of used automotive oil.
