"This is another great opportunity to help further the recycling of waste tires into projects with substantial public benefit," said Board Chair Margo Reid Brown. "California continues to make inroads against the wasteful practice of throwing away many valuable materials."
Including these grants, the CIWMB has approved 16 RAC grants totaling $2.55 million since the beginning of the year. The money will help recycle thousands of waste tires back into city streets and repave several miles of roadways.
Funds from the Board’s Targeted Rubberized Asphalt Concrete Incentive Grant Program help first-time and/or limited RAC users cover the difference in costs of using the material in lieu of conventional asphalt paving. The money comes out of the $1.75 the State collects on the sale of each new tire in California. A portion of the fee—75 cents—is allocated towards air emission programs.
The grants will be directed to help the local governmental agencies pave various streets in need of repairs. The following amounts were approved:
City of Calipatria (Imperial County), $200,000
City of Lompoc (Santa Barbara County), $200,000
Santa Cruz County, $200,000
City of Fremont (Alameda County), $175,000
City of Pittsburg (Contra Costa County), $175,000
City of Rancho Cordova (Sacramento County), $175,000
City of Sacramento (Sacramento County), $175,000

City of Brea (Orange County), $150,000
City of Delano (Kern County), $150,000
City of San Fernando (LA County), $150,000
In January 2006, the Board approved RAC related grants for the following jurisdictions:

City of La Verne (Los Angeles County), $150,000
City of Nevada City (Nevada County), $150,000
