Several organizations and government departments in Ciudad Juárez in northern Mexico have been engaged in discussions to establish a “recycling first” mentality in the region.
According to an online article on the Juarez Hoy website, a recent meeting of the city’s Commission of Public Services included a presentation from a city sanitation department official who proposed a pathway to achieve greater recycling volumes in the city, which is across the border from the Texas city of El Paso.
The official, José Antonio Lozoya Sapién, pointed to programs underway in Mexico City as potentially worthy of emulation in Ciudad Juárez, according to the Juárez Hoy article.
The official reportedly outlined that program as consisting of two tasks to be accomplished first:
- teaching residents to properly sort municipal solid waste (MSW) and recyclable items into organic and inorganic fractions; and
- the establishment of recycling drop-off centers so paper, cardboard and recyclable containers can be collected with less effort.
City officials at the Commission meeting reportedly agreed to send a delegation to Mexico City to learn more about its program and to work with residential subdivision and shopping center managers on the initial placement of drop-off centers.
