City Scrap & Salvage, a family owned scrap facility in Akron, Ohio, recently completed a retrofit of its shredder.
The company, which was using a locomotive engine to power a 2,000 horsepower shredder, has invested around $1.3 million to replace the locomotive engine with two natural gas engines. Additionally, the company put ion a new shredder box and replaced the rotor.
The result, according to Randy Katz, one of the owners of City Scrap, is the company has increased total horsepower to 3,000. The company also expects to double the volume of material it will be able to shred.
According to local press reports, the previous shredder was able to handle around 2,000 tons of steel a month, with the expectation that the new shredder will allow the company to increase the volume to 4,000 tons per month.
