City Carton Golf Outing Scores for Charity

City Carton/Ockenfels family outing raises nearly $100,000.

More than $97,500 has been raised to benefit American Cancer Society (ACS) children’s programs at the City Carton Recycling/Ockenfels Family Foundation 15th Annual Charity Golf Outing, held in Iowa in mid-August.

Fla
Joe Gitch (left) of Coralville, Iowa, sank a hole-in-one on Hole #9 at the City Carton Recycling/Ockenfels Family Foundation Charity Golf Outing, enabling him to win $10,000 toward a new car at Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza, Davenport, Iowa. Congratulating him (right to left) are: Sean McCarty, Brown Deer Head PGA Golf Professional; Dave Prohaska, Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza; and Brian Holtz, City Carton Recycling.

The outing collects and donates the funds through the “Debbie Ockenfels - Kids Rock!” Foundation. Portions of the outing proceeds are donated to “The Heart Connection,” a camp for children with cancer and their siblings and to the ACS’s Scholarship Program. The outing’s expenses are paid by the Ockenfels Family Foundation, helping ensure donations reach the charities.

For each of the last 15 years, the outing has been held in memory of Deborah Ockenfels, daughter of City Carton Recycling founders Mort and Marcy. Deborah died of cancer at the age of 17.

More than 160 golfers from across the United States and Canada teed off this year. More than 40 additional friends, family and City Carton Recycling associates assisted with the event, which was held Aug. 11, 2009 at the Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville, Iowa.

Donations are raised in part through activity and hole sponsorships. Among the leading sponsors in 2009 were Trex, Pralumex, L & P Wire Tie Systems, Waste Management/Recycle America, Core Vens Insurance, Hills Bank & Trust, Point Builders LLC, Machinex, Kathy and Andy Ockenfels, IPS Balers and Vecoplan.

Raffle tickets sold throughout the day’s event and earned by golfers as they tested their skill at various course games also helped raise funds.

A post-outing party featured food and beverages as well as the handing out of sponsorship gifts and golfing trophies. A live auction completed the evening.

More than $650,000 has been raised and donated to the American Cancer Society and children’s cancer programs at the 15 charity outings combined, according to the Ockenfels family.
