City Carton Adds to Fundraising Total

Iowa recycling company's 18th annual golf outing raises $129,000 to fight cancer.

The 18th annual City Carton Recycling/Ockenfels Family Foundation Charity Golf Outing raised more than $129,000 for two charities that conduct cancer research or assist families affected by cancer. The event was held Aug. 7, 2012, at the Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville, Iowa (near Iowa City).

According to Iowa City-based City Carton Recycling, which also operates a document destruction division known as Document Destruction and Recycling Services, the 18 golf outings combined have raised more than $1 million dollars for the American Cancer Society’s Scholarship Program and the nonprofit Children’s Cancer Connection.

Each year, the outing raises funds that are donated through the “Debbie Ockenfels - Kids Rock!” Foundation. Portions of the outing proceeds are donated to the Children’s Cancer Connection program, which runs camps for children with cancer and their siblings. The outing’s expenses are paid by the Ockenfels Family Foundation.

The outing is held in memory of Deborah Ockenfels, daughter of City Carton Recycling founders Mort and Marcy Okenfels. Deborah died of cancer in 1972 at the age of 17.

More than 170 golfers from across the United States and Canada played in this year’s event.

Sponsors for the 2012 event included International Paper, Waste Management Recycle America, Machinex, IPS Balers, Vecoplan, L&P Wire Tie Systems, QuincyRecycle and Midwest Shredding Service LLC.
