Software company cieTrade Systems Inc., Stamford, Connecticut, has announced it will offer specialized software and integration methods to help its clients deal with new regulations created by an amendment the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The new regulations state that, beginning, July 1, 2016, all ocean container shipments will be required to submit a verified gross mass (VGM) for each container before being loaded on a vessel. VGM is defined as the total weight of the container, including the net weight of the cargo and the tare weight of the container itself. Failure to comply or to submit this information in a timely manner can result in containers not being loaded onto a vessel or being rejected from entering the port entirely.
Clients using INTTRA can submit their e-VGM messages to a wide range of participating carriers, directly from cieTrade, where both initial submissions and acknowledgements can be tracked. VGMs also can be sent from cieTrade using the industry standard verification of mass (VERMAS) EDI document format, created specifically for VGM messages. CieTrade says it has also introduced its own compliant Email-VGM spreadsheet document that can be easily generated for any container in the software.
For recycling plants, scrap yards and brokers that need to supply container tare weights to export customers, VGM weight and the container equipment tare weight fields can now be recorded and have been added to critical documents, such as the Bill of Lading and the Booking-Export Packing List. For recycling plants that already use the ciePhoto mobile app for container photos, the container tare weight can be also captured at the point of loading and automatically applied to its corresponding container shipment within the system, according to cieTrade.
“As a leading provider of software for commodity exporters and within the recycling industry, our clients look to us for knowledge and best practices to help them meet challenges such as this” says Udomchai Motayasiri, senior vice president at cieTrade Systems. “Our VGM support implementation provides a multifaceted response to this new requirement to help minimize its impact on our clients.”
