China Enhances Paper Recycling, Cuts Outdated Capacity

Government agency plans on taking steps to reduce pollution in China.

The China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced that the country’s paper-making sector will eliminate at least 10 million metric tons of outdated capacity by 2015, while increasing its recycling capabilities to reduce pollution in the country.

In a report published by Xinhua, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology says that it aims to increase the recycling rate of recovered paper to 72.1 percent in five years from its current level of 71.5 percent.

The Ministry notes that China’s paper-making industry faces resource, energy and environmental pressure, thus requiring faster restructuring of the sector.

The statement forecast the country’s consumption of paper and paperboard will reach 114.7 million metric tons by 2015, and that paper consumption will see an annual 4.6-percent rise during the nation's 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).

Meanwhile, output is likely to hit 116 million metric tons, the statement adds.
