China Continues to Boost Scrap Metal Imports

Ferrous, copper and aluminum all post sharp gains for July, first seven months of year.

The most recent figures from the Chinese General Administration of Customs show that China imported 630,000 tons of scrap steel valued at $128.282 million in July 2004, a 36 percent increase from figures the same time last year..

 

The figures for the month pushed the seven-month total to 6.410 million tons valued at about $1.4 billion. 1,406.243 million, a 108 percent jump from figures the same time last year.

 

According to the government agency, imports of copper scrap from the United States to China reached 339,457 tons for the month of July. The value for the shipments were $192 million. The shipment total was a 12 percent increase from figures the same time last year.

 

For the first seven months shipments stand at 2.075 million tons with a value of $1.22 billion, an increase of slightly less than 70 percent from Jan.-July of last year.

 

Aluminum scrap shipments from the United States to China also posted a significant increase. For the month shipments stand at 102,000 tons with a value of $84 million. The shipment total was an increase of 40 percent from last July’s import total.

 

The figures for he month pushed the seven-month shipment total to 522,293 tons valued at $461.5 million. The shipment total for the first seven months is more than a 100 percent increase form figures the same time last year.
