Chattanooga, Tennessee, company offers curbside glass recycling

Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company Overlooked Materials has launched curbside glass recycling for residents of Chattanooga, a service that has not been available since the city stopped offering it in 2018, Chattanooga Pulse reports.

Overlooked Materials processes collected glass in a local facility using a specially designed glass pulverizing system. The facility can convert up to 4,000 tons of glass per year into different grades of sand and aggregate products, according to the report, which is about four times the amount of glass currently collected annually at all recycling dropoff centers in Chattanooga, Hamilton County and Signal Mountain.

Overlooked says it hopes to keep processed glass products in the local economy, for use in the city’s building, landscaping and industrial markets. Chattanooga has a long tradition of glass bottling and processing, according to the report, but Overlooked is the first company to process glass locally since the Chattanooga Bottle Company facility closed its doors in the 1980s.

Current collection areas include Chattanooga, Red Bank, Signal Mountain, Hixson, Lookout Mountain, Ridgeside and East Ridge. Residential and commercial customers will receive a yellow bin they can place their glass in for monthly pickup and recycling.
