Charges Filed Against Six Auto Dismantlers

Misdemeanor charges filed against six L.A. auto dismantlers.

Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo has filed misdemeanor charges against six Sun Valley auto dismantlers accused of violating conditions of their water permits and mishandling hazardous waste.

The businesses were inspected in January as part of a multi-agency task force cracking down on environmental problems in the heavily industrial Sun Valley. The state and local water, air, waste and fire agencies inspected 103 auto dismantlers, and the six were the first to be charged.

Charges were filed against West Coast Auto Parts and Salvage, A-1 Scrap Metal, L.A. Japanese Auto Dismantling, PDQ Auto Parts, Mike's Auto Wrecking Inc., Branford Auto Wrecking Inc.

The charges range from improper labeling of hazardous waste to failure to use proper storm-water maintenance practices. Most charges carry penalties of up to a year in jail and/or fines up to $5,000.

"You deal with the entry level violations and you'll prevent more serious violations for occurring in the neighborhood," Delgadillo.

The Sun Valley task force has also targeted gravel and mining operations and Bradley Landfill. Los Angeles Daily News
