Group advocates for formalized auto parts recycling in Colombia

The Experimentation and Road Safety Center of Colombia (CESVI) has been operating a “spare parts center” in that nation to help demonstrate the value of harvesting saleable components from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs).

According to an online article from the Bogotá, Colombia-based La Republica, the center has dismantled more than 4,000 vehicles between 2011 and 2018 to help determine how Colombia can establish a dismantling and component sales infrastructure for ELVs in that nation.

The director of the CESVI Repuestos disassembly center is quoted by La Republica as saying, “It is a process that does not take much time and not only helps the environment, but also the small and medium buyers who are interested in acquiring spare parts for vehicles that no longer have a useful life.”

The organization has included a “depollution” process to demonstrate the necessity for environmentally sound ELV procedures, according to the report, and a title search process to ensure the work is legally compliant.

The CESVI effort also has linked its efforts with existing scrap tire recycling firms in Colombia, including the Green Wheel Corp., which has some “177 collection points with coverage in 20 departments of the country” forged by “more than 70 associated companies,” according to La Republica. The work of Green Wheel Corp. has helped recycle more than 6.5 million tires in Colombia between 2014 and 2018, according to the report.
