A conference scheduled for February in Orlando, Fla., will bring together researchers in the field of handling wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA). The presenters will share research results and attempt to develop a research agenda for future studies.
The Environmental Impacts of Preservative Treated Wood conference has been scheduled for Feb. 8-11 at the Orlando Airport Marriott.
Some CCA-treated wood can contain elevated concentrations of arsenic and chromium, making it undesirable in scrap wood streams and un-lined landfills. The safe handling of the treated wood and alternatives available will be of interest to companies that handle scrap lumber as well as builders who are seeking alternatives types of treated wood.
Topics covered will include alternative wood treatment chemicals; leaching of preservative treated wood; the fate of preservative treated wood upon disposal; and available disposal options.
Those seeking more information about the conference can go to the to the www.ficess.org Web site or call the University of Florida Department of Conferences at (352) 392-1701.
The conference is being presented by the Florida Interdisciplinary Center for Environmentally Sounds Solutions at the University of Florida, College of Engineering and funded by the National Science Foundation Partnerships for Innovation and the Directorate for Engineering.Latest from Recycling Today
