Oregon’s Beverage Container Act, passed in 197became, requires a 5-cent deposit on all beer, malt and carbonated soft drink containers. The law was expanded Jan. 1, 2009, to include bottled water and requires retail stores to redeem containers, regardless of brand, if they sell the same type of beverage.
To meet the challenges associated with the expanded law, most of the beverage distributors operating in the state have formed the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative (OBRC).
OBRC operates a statewide pickup and processing program through with more than 300 retailers throughout Oregon use reverse vending machines (RVM). To handle the Co-Op's RVM needs, OBRC has partnered exclusively with CBSI, an American owned and operated RVM manufacturer.
Headquartered in Portland, Ore., with offices in Iowa and Michigan, CBSI has been manufacturing RVM’s since 1992.
Bill Janner, president of CBSI, says, “CBSI is uniquely equipped to handle the demands of the Oregon Bottle Bill. We are very proud to partner with OBRC, the first statewide Co-Op of its kind in the country.”
