Solutia, based in St. Louis, develops chemicals, resins and additives for a host of industries.
As part of the project just announced, Nylon Board will accept post-consumer carpet from Solutia's customers and recycle it into synthetic construction sheet materials.
James O'Blennis, general manager for Nylon Board Manufacturing, said the company works to bring innovative new products to the market, extracting additional value from the original barrel of oil used to produce them. In addition, both companies work to keep the used carpet out of landfills.
"Solutia is excited to have the opportunity to work with a Nylon Board Manufacturing, an emerging leader in post consumer carpet recycle. Solutia's objective is to deliver real solutions to the challenge of carpet landfill diversion. This is another major step forward in our ability to meet our commitment," said Kaye Gosline, director of contract fiber sales for Solutia.
Nylon Board Manufacturing, headquartered in Medford, Minn., is focused on manufacturing products that could replace many of the wood and plastic products on the market.
After researching many possible materials, Nylon Board determined that post- consumer carpet and post-industrial carpet could be used to make affordable, waterproof, insect-proof, and skid-resistant sheeting. NBM can process carpet on a continuous pace to use up to 80,000 pounds per day on its single manufacturing line.
