Honeywell International, Morristown, N.J., and the Dutch chemicals company DSM have decided to suspend production at the Evergreen Nylon Recycling plant in Augusta, Ga., according to a Reuters report. The companies cited higher than expected costs and weak market conditions.
Evergreen was built to be the world's largest commercial nylon recycling facility, with the ability to process 45,000 metric tons annually of nylon obtained from used carpeting. The plant was reportedly having difficulty procuring enough carpeting to run at or near capacity.
Some 90 employees are expected to be laid off at the Augusta plant while Honeywell and DSM executives evaluate potential capital investments that would allow the facility to reopen.
