Carolinas Recycling Group Purchases Wendt/SSE Stainless Steel & Metal Sorting Facility

Installation to be completed by end of November.

Carolinas Recycling Group LLC (CRG), Lyman, S.C., has purchased a Wendt/SSE Stainless Steel and Metal Sorting facility with a 72-inch wide SSE Separator. The equipment is designed to recover metals currently heading to the landfill, including stainless steel, copper windings and insulated and bare copper wire, and picks up where eddy current separators leave off.

Wendt Corp., Tonawanda, N.Y., is the exclusive North American distributor for the technology offered by Separation Systems Engineering GmbH (SSE), Wedel, Germany. This will be the third SSE Stainless Steel Separator Wendt has sold in the United States, while the SSE’s group of companies has sold 57 separators worldwide to the scrap recycling industry, though more than 200 separators total have been sold to a variety of industries.

CRG will complete its installation in late November.

“CRG’s Operations Manager Ray Sarmento first heard about the Technology at the Tampa Shredder Seminar in February 2003,” CRG’s Vice President Ted Davis said. “Ray saw the potential benefit to CRG’s bottom line and has been the driving force behind CRG pursuing this opportunity.”

CRG allowed Wendt to demonstrate the technology using materials from its facility. “Running our own materials provided CRG with real data that we could base our decision on. It eliminated all the guesswork,” Davis said. “CRG will now be able to produce a new revenue stream with very little cost investment. We expect a very quick payback. Opportunities like this are rare.”

Davis continued, “We are the very beginning of a huge industry trend, very much like when eddy currents were introduced. It is very exciting! I see this technology continuing to advance and eventually grading the recovered metals product.”
