Caraustar Industries Inc. announced that it is closing its Cedartown, Ga., paperboard mill. The decision to close the mill is part of the company’s earlier announced plan to reorganize its various operations.
The decision continues a relentless downsizing of the domestic paper and paperboard industry over the past several years. As the U.S. attempts to work off some overcapacity, a host of paper and paperboard mills have opted to shut down operations as demand has failed to meet the supply.
The Cedartown plant produces roughly 28,000 tons of recycled uncoated paperboard. The finished product is consumed internally. The company said that other Caraustar mills are expected to fill the void left by the Cedartown plant.Latest from Recycling Today
