Canadian Scrap Theft Bill Defeated

Nova Scotia committee fails to come to agreement on proposed legislation on scrap metal theft.

A bill proposed in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia meant to address the problem of scrap metal left has been defeated in committee, according to a report in the Chronicle Herald (Halifax, Nova Scotia.)

The law amendments committee failed to reach an agreement on the proposed Bill 148 last week. The bill was introduced May 2 and would have required scrap metal dealers to confirm a seller’s identity and record information about the transaction, according to the report.

Several area scrap dealers appeared before the law amendment’s committee at the May 27 meeting to voice concerns that they had not been consulted about the proposed legislation.

According to the report, the bill’s proponents hope to reintroduce it in the fall.
