The Alberta provincial government has set up what it claims is the first electronics recycling program in Canada.
Beginning Oct. 1 of this year, all televisions, computers and other electronics equipment will be collected, reused, recycled and turned into new products for residents of the province.
The collection of the products will be coordinated through local drop off centers, as well as with collection drives. The fee for the service will range from $5-45, depending on the item. The fee will include the costs of the following: collection, transportation, recycling, education programs and research.
Management of the program will be given to the Alberta Recycling Management Authority, a non-profit organization. Alberta’s existing tire recycling program will be consolidated with the ARMA to improve the efficiency of the program throughout the province. ARMA will manage the programs through two divisions – Tire Recycling Alberta and Electronics Recycling Alberta.
